An interview with Diana DeLucia

Producer, Author and Photographer of Golf Club World, Behind the Gates.

Interview by Frank Perretti

Meet Diana

What inspired you to create the Golf Club World book project?

I co-published, and was the lead photographer for “Restaurant Insider Magazine” in New York City, for five years. It’s a behind the scenes magazine. My interest was generated by illuminating certain aspects of the business, which most people never see. This inspired me to seek out other fields that do not receive the attention they deserve. I wanted to apply this idea in other areas.

How did this lead you to the golf industry?

My first train of thought was country clubs, many of which operate outstanding dining establishments with unique characteristics and ambience. This led me toward the golf club industry. Once I started my research with respect to the restaurants, I gained an interest in learning about the operational aspect of a golf club from the inside out, as well as the dining. I was hooked after that.

Why would golf club members be interested in reading about golf club operations?

Members are very involved with their clubs. They've made a significant investment to join the club; they spend a tremendous amount of time there and typically have a lot of pride in their club. It's like a second home to them, a place of community where they can relax and entertain their friends and clients.

Other than the members, who would be interested in reading about the people who make a golf club come to life?

There are millions of golf enthusiasts around the world, and the industry is growing globally at an impressive rate. Readers may be interested in golf course management, grounds maintenance; golf club histories or they may enjoy reading about golf professionals. Some may be interested in golf course architecture or interior and exterior design or a reader may be a “Foodie” who is interested in world-wide cuisine and fine wines, which often accompany luxury golf clubs. The project is unique in its diversity with comprehensive coverage given to each establishment.

How many people have you interviewed for this project?

I have interviewed over 48 people world wide, including CEO/owners, general managers, golf professionals, greens keepers and executive chefs. They have worked closely with me to create great photography of the facilities and the people who make them special. In addition, a lot of thought and effort has gone into the preparation of each recipe and wine pairing. Golf Club World contains at least four recipes complete with wine pairings per club; this alone makes it a unique keepsake.

What makes Golf Club World, Behind the Gates so special?

My unique background has been matched with 12 fine and unique golf clubs, resorts and courses around the world, which have opened their doors to me and allowed me to tell their stories from a unique perspective accompanied by full color photography, insightful interviews and fabulous recipes. It’s a sweet project that is educational and important to anyone involved in golf and the growth of the game in the future, including the new frontier, China, which has over 800 golf courses, unofficially. This will serve to increase the audience for this work, which I hope will serve as the definitive statement of the magical allure of golf.
